On
1/7/95 the traditional effective method of termite protection (Organochloride
spraying) was banned in Queensland and replaced by alternative, less effective,
more expensive methods as specified in A.S.3660. And to make sure they
could not be held responsible the Code included the wording;
Irrespective
of which method is used, IT IS THE OWNERS RESPONSIBILITY TO ENSURE THE
ON-GOING MAINTENANCE OF THE SYSTEM IS CARRIED OUT.
Now they are
blaming; Builders, Pest Controllers, and anybody
else but themselves for the 70% increase in
Infestations. (Estimated to be in the order of 1 in 3
of all new homes)
5
Years Later (July 2000) --- TERMITE
PLAGUE-
Statements
in the press during "Termite Awareness Week" would have us believe
that that these creatures have suddenly reached PLAGUE proportions.
NOT TRUE.
The
Sunshine Coast has always been a high-risk area and up until 5 years ago
the situation was under control. That was when our Government in its wisdom,
totally banned the use of organochlorides.
Under-slab
soil pre-treatment with this chemical was found to be the only effective
means for termite control, but In July 1995 it was replaced by the less
effective methods in use today.
Now
they are looking for somebody else to blame for this problem of their own
making so as to drag them before their tribunals and make a scapegoats
of them.
Yes the organochlorides
were; potent, persistent and dangerous if
used by naive people - not to mention
CHEAP,
EASY TO USE, and HIGHLY EFFECTIVE. - That's
why they worked - and whilst I agree they needed to be removed from sale
as over the counter General Pesticides for Cocroaches, Spiders, Ants and
Lawn Grub Killers, they should have been retained
specifically for Sub-Slab Pre-Treatment for Termite Control
by Licensed Applicators.
It was our own
Governments knee-jerk reaction to appease the ultra conservative conservation
lobby that has caused this present crisis, which now puts so many of our
new homes at risk.
